Position Statement

Stand Up to Sonoma County's Power Brokers - Save Our Land and Roads from Gravel Mining

Dated April 1, 2010. CARRQ Position Statement is in response to the County of Sonoma's proposal to allow the construction of a private road, benefiting the quarry developer, across land preserved by the Sonoma County Open Space and Agricultural Preservation District.  This is land the quarry developer, John Barella, was paid $2.3 million of taxpayer funds to protect and preserve, and the County had proposed to build a road across to allow one million gravel trucks over 20 years to cross over.  In addition, the trucks are 100% controlled and/or contracted by John Barella benefiting only his economic interests.

After a ground swell of opposition from Sonoma County and the region that included land trusts, ranchers, farmers, open space easement holders, organizations, individuals, and tax payers (please see Supporters under our About section) the Open Space Board of Directors failed to pass the staff supported and Planning Commission approved plan.
